The 2022 Symposium
The 2022 Northeast Ohio GIS Symposium continued its tradition of delivering timely, relevant, and engaging geospatial education through a full-day virtual conference that brought together GIS professionals from government, academia, and the private sector. As organizations increasingly relied on location intelligence to solve complex challenges, the symposium provided an outstanding forum for sharing ideas, exploring emerging technologies, and strengthening connections throughout Ohio's geospatial community.
The program featured a diverse lineup of presentations covering some of the profession's most important and rapidly evolving topics. The symposium opened with a thought-provoking keynote by Dr. Johnny Finn, examining the lasting impacts of historic housing policies on today's communities. Throughout the day, attendees explored advancements in LiDAR through the U.S. Geological Survey's 3D Elevation Program, GIS integration for enterprise asset management, statewide parcel initiatives, Next Generation 9-1-1, the modernization of the National Spatial Reference System, and innovative applications from organizations including the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission, OGRIP, Esri, Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District, NOAA, Cuyahoga County GIS, and others.
The 2022 symposium demonstrated the growing role of GIS as an essential technology for planning, infrastructure management, public safety, equity, and decision-making. By combining nationally recognized speakers with practical case studies from across Ohio, the event continued its mission of advancing geospatial education, fostering professional collaboration, and showcasing the innovative work being performed throughout the region. Even in a virtual format, the Northeast Ohio GIS Symposium remained a valuable gathering place for exchanging ideas, technical knowledge, and professional connections that continue to strengthen the geospatial community.
